The iPad in Your Universal Design for Learning Toolkit

This three-part webinar series explores how iPads can be an integral part of your Universal Design for Learning toolkit. You will learn about built-in universal access features to maximize accessibility, as well as how to select appropriate apps from the approximately one million that are now available. In addition, accessories that can multiply the effectiveness of the classroom iPad will be discussed.

  • Identify and select accessibility features that support multiple means of representation, expression and engagement.
  • Discuss appropriate apps to ensure all students achieve meaningful academic and social participation.
  • Discuss and select appropriate accessories to maximize effectiveness of  iPads in the classroom.

Alex DunnAlex Dunn is a Speech-Language Pathologist with the Upper Canada District School Board and president of Inclusioneers, an organization dedicated to ensuring that ALL students achieve the goals of meaningful education and social participation. She has presented on SMART Technology, iDevices, and assistive technology across the United States and Canada and in Germany, the United Kingdom, Spain, and Puerto Rico. Alex was named SMART Technologies Exemplary Educator of the Year for Canada for 2012 and was awarded the prestigious C21 Shifting Minds National Award for distinctive achievement in the field of 21st Century learning and innovation.  Alex was appointed as an Officer for Special Education Technology Special Interest Group for the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE). 

In February 2013, Alex was named the recipient of the 2013 Canadian Association for Community Living Inclusive Education Award.  The programs she designs not only address the individual needs of students, but also support their interaction as valued members of their classrooms and schools.  Alex uses SMART Boards, iPads, Nintendo DSis and a host of software programs to ensure every student is able to participate to his or her fullest capability.  Her enthusiasm has led her to create the Smart Inclusion wiki, a database that is a useful resource for parents, teachers and the public, all of whom are invited to provide their own insights by posting their own material.  Alex uses her Twitter account (@SmartInclusion) to support family members, teachers and other professionals to ask questions and share pertinent information.
