Thank you for your interest in serving in a leadership position for the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) as either a member of the Board of Directors or as a Student Representative to the Representative Assembly

How to Apply:

  • Complete the online candidate application by 4:00 p.m. Eastern Time, May 12, 2014.
  • E-mail all letters of recommendation (in PDF format) to by 4:00 p.m. Eastern Time, May 12, 2014.

DEADLINE:  The online application, hosted by CEC’s election services provider, must be submitted no later than 4:00 pm EST, May 12, 2014.  Access the official online application here. 

PREVIEW THE APPLICATION:  A preview of the application is provided for your convenience.  All candidates must complete the online application, hosted by CEC's election services provider.  A link will be provided here when the application site is live.  All portions of the application must be completed. Please feel free to contact a member of the Nominations Standing Committee or send an e-mail to with questions about completing the candidate application.  When you have submitted a completed application though CEC's election services provider's website, a member of the committee will be assigned as your point of contact throughout the processes of candidate selection and the election.

LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION: Applicants for Board positions must submit two letters of recommendation. Applicants for President Elect must submit three letters.  Letters of recommendation must be received by 4:00 pm EST on May 12, 2014, and should be sent to

President Elect: Nominees must have served on the Board of Directors or have equivalent leadership experience within other areas of the Council, in similar organizations/associations, and/or in major administrative roles to be considered by the Nominations Standing Committee (NSC) for this position.

Member-at-Large Positions:  Nominees for these positions should have demonstrated knowledge and/or experience with the Council and its various activities.

Member-at-Large, Non-Designated (3 positions): Any member of the Council, including those members who could file for any designated position.

Member-at-Large, Classroom Ranks (1 position): Person who provides direct educational services to exceptional children and youth (infancy through transition), at the time of election and throughout the term of office.

Member-at-Large, Diverse Ethnic and Multicultural Groups (1 position): Any member of the Council belonging to a group that, because of racial or ethnic origin, constitutes a distinctive and recognizable entity in our society, e.g., American Indian, Alaskan Native or First Nations; Asian, Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander; Black or African American; Hispanic, Latino/a or Spanish. For the 2015 seat, preference will be given to Asian, Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander candidates.

Student Member (1 position)*: Any student member of the Council who is a student (as per the Council’s definition) at the time of nomination, appointment, and at the beginning of the term of office.

A student member shall be a person enrolled in The Council who is a full-time or part-time student during the academic year as defined by an accredited college or university, for a period of no longer than 6 cumulative years.

The candidates for the Student Representative to the Representative Assembly are selected by the CEC Student Committee.  All candidates must be a CEC Student member.  Before you apply, please review the candidate information and preview application.
