Apply for the Board of Directors or to be a Student Representative to the Representative Assembly

Thank you for your interest in serving in a leadership position for the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) as either a member of the Board of Directors or as a Student Representative to the Representative Assembly

The Nominations Standing Committee (NSC) is looking for candidates who, beyond leadership experience within CEC, are open-minded, creative, strategic thinkers with excellent communication, problem-solving and decision-making skills. Board of Directors

Before you apply, you should:

  • Once you login to the online application, you must COMPLETE THE APPLICATION.  You cannot save and go back later to edit or complete.
  • The length of final candidate information for inclusion in the printed bio book is limited. Constraints are based upon the size of the booklet.  Each candidate is limited to approximately 6,200 characters (including spaces).  The character limit for each entry is indicated below.
  • Slated candidates may be required to edit the information submitted on their application so that it complies with space limitations.


DEADLINE:  The official online application must be completed no later than 4:00 pm EST, May 13, 2015

LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION: Applicants for Board positions must submit two letters of recommendation. Applicants for President Elect must submit three letters.  Letters of recommendation must be received by 4:00 pm EST on May 13, 2015, and should be sent to  


President Elect: Nominees must have served on the Board of Directors or have equivalent leadership experience within other areas of the Council, in similar organizations/associations, and/or in major administrative roles to be considered for this position.

Each slated candidate for President Elect will make 2 short video clips (with the assistance of CEC staff), each of approximately 2 minutes in length, which will be posted to CEC’s website.  Read more.

Member-at-Large Positions:  Nominees for these positions should have demonstrated knowledge and/or experience with the Council and its various activities.

Member-at-Large, Non-Designated (3 positions): Any member of the Council, including those members who could file for any designated position.

Member-at-Large, Diverse Ethnic and Multicultural Groups (2 position): Any member of the Council belonging to a group that, because of racial or ethnic origin, constitutes a distinctive and recognizable entity in our society, e.g., American Indian, Alaskan Native or First Nations; Asian, Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander; Black or African American; Hispanic, Latino/a or Spanish. For the 2016 seat, preference will be given to African American and Native American/First Nations candidates.

Student Representative to the Representative Assembly

Candidates slated for election as one of 2 Student Representatives to the Representative Assembly are selected by the CEC Student Committee and voted on by Student members.  All candidates must be a CEC Student member.  Before you apply, please review the candidate information and preview application

  • Prepare your application responses in advance.  The official online application allows for ONE-TIME ACCESS ONLY.  You should plan to copy your responses and paste them into the application form.
  • Complete the online candidate application by 12:00 noon EST, May 26, 2015. 
  • Email to request an email notice when the online application is live.
  • Have letters of recommendation emailed in PDF format to by 12:00 noon EST, May 26, 2015.
