Educational site visits will depart from the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center. Please plan to arrive 15 minutes prior to departure time. All Site Visits are fully accessible. If you require special assistance, please contact Jane Uffelman at janeu@cec.sped.org.

Description: The Nellie Reddix Center is a one-of-a-kind school located in the Medical Center area of the Northside Independent School District (NISD). Housed at the Reddix Center are a number of NISD special education support programs as well as vocational and habilitation classes. Visitors will tour the Center and learn about these programs and classes.

Description: Founded in 1966, the mission of the Brighton Center is to provide family and community education and developmental services to children (ages birth to 22) with disabilities or delays, empowering them to achieve their individual potential and making them successful in every community. The overall objective of Brighton Center is to improve the quality of life for children with disabilities accomplished through Brighton School's four major programs including Early Childhood Intervention (ECI) services, Bright Beginnings Child Development Center, the Parent Alliance for Learning and Support (PALS) program, and Precious Minds, New Connections (PMNC) parenting program. Visitors will tour the facility and learn about the various programs.

Focus: Communicative Disabilities and Deafness; Technology and Media
Description: Founded in 1947 because of a mother’s love, the Sunshine Cottage has improved the lives of children who are deaf and hard of hearing by giving them the necessary skills to learn in a rich auditory-oral environment. Visitors will learn about the school which is a center for hearing and speech. The Center promotes listening and spoken language through programs that help children utilize state-of-the-art technology to communicate naturally and effectively with intelligible speech, using residual hearing without the use of sign language. In addition to providing the very best early identification and intervention services for infants, birth to three years of age, Sunshine Cottage offers a comprehensive day-school program for children, preschool through fifth grade, with state-of-the-art educational and hearing technology. Classes are taught by master-level educators, certified in deaf-education.

Description: TEAMabilitywas recently showcased on national television and is currently the only one of its kind in the nation. The mission of TLC is to ensure that children with severe multiple disabilities have the opportunity to benefit from therapeutic educational intervention to participate actively in life. The Center is dedicated to serving only children with severe multiple disabilities and their families with a focus on children with a combination of profound motor, cognitive, and sensory impairments. Visitors will learn how TEAMability advocates for and uses a collaborative team evaluative and intervention process that involves the child, parent/caregiver, and members of a transdisciplinary team.

Description: In 2009, this ultra-accessible 25-acre family fun park began as a dream of what an inclusive park could be. It became a reality thanks to philanthropist Gordon Hartman, whose daughter Morgan has special needs. His vision was to create an environment for inclusion and understanding, where those needing a safe place to relax and enjoy the outdoors with family and caregivers would find an oasis. Visitors will go behind the scenes of this one-of-a-kind family fun park and then experience the wonders of Morgan’s Wonderland. *A box lunch is included in the ticket price.
