In advocating on behalf of children with exceptionalities, CEC examines policy issues, develops appropriate responses to those issues and influences local, state, provincial and federal legislation. CEC also monitors and makes recommendations for program regulations and funding. In addition, CEC maintains a network among its units for influencing policy.

As the recognized leader for special education professional standards, CEC develops standards, ethics and practices and guidelines to ensure that individuals with exceptionalities have access to well-prepared, career-oriented special educators.

CEC's Resources offer educators many aids to assist them in providing the best of special education services.

A subdivision is a state, province, or Canada-wide unit comprised of members of a specific CEC division. For example, the Virginia DEC Subdivision (often referred to as "VA DEC") is comprised of all DEC members in Virginia.

Subdivisions provide networking, professional development, and information-sharing for division members in their state, province, or Canada. Typical subdivision activities include sponsoring sessions, strands or workshops at state or provincial conferences; publishing a newsletter; political advocacy; and supporting the activities of their division and state or province. Each subdivision's activities determined by its members and officers.
