Autism and Inclusion

The Comprehensive Autism Planning System (CAPS) approach assists educators and teams in planning and implementing educational programs for students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The goal is to foster long-range systemic change in the development of educational planning for students with autism and to build local capacity. CAPS provides teams with a framework for developing a comprehensive program for individuals with ASD. The areas covered in this process approach include short-term individual goals, specially designed instruction, data collection, instructional materials, social skills, sensory supports, and generalization of goals.

Participants will be able to:

  • Identify levels of comprehensive planning.
  • Identify evidence-based practices that meet the needs of individuals across the spectrum
  • Integrate necessary interventions across an individual's day.

Utilizing RTI For Behavioral Support

Arlington, VA (Location and Directions)

Presenter: Susan Barrett (Bio)

This regional workshop, geared for administrators, leadership team members, behavioral specialists and other support service professionals, will explore the behavioral intervention team that uses a problem-solving approach to address the behavioral needs of all students. Learn how this model guides the development, implementation and monitoring of appropriately matched, evidence-based, behavioral interventions.

Goals for this workshop:

  • Define RTI & features
  • Describe SW-PBS v. RTI
  • Show examples of applied research
  • Participants will work on an action plan as a way to demonstrate their understanding of the process, build fluency, and apply the new information to their specific settings. Major characteristics of RTI/PBS will be used to guide the process:
    • Universal screening
    • Data-based decision making and problem solving
    • Continuous progress monitoring
    • Student performance
    • Continuum of evidence-based interventions
    • Implementation fidelity

Participants will be able to:

  • Describe activities that focus on design, implementation and monitoring of school wide continuum of positive behavior support
  • Identify and design a district-or school-wide staff development and coaching model that assists schools in building capacity.
  • Discuss and identify behavior interventions at each tier within the RTI model.
