Rationale — Why LCCE? Why Now?
If students with special learning needs are going to survive and
become independent and productive adults, they must acquire an adequate
repertoire of skills for living and working in their communities.
Families alone may not be able to help these children and youth
develop the healthy self-concepts, attitudes, behaviors, and necessary
career and life skills they will need. It has become quite apparent that
if the educational system does not provide this type of education to
these students, most will not learn these critical functional
skills.
Life Centered Career Education was designed as a comprehensive
functional curriculum to fill these needs. And since the United States
Congress has recognized the importance of sending young people —
including those with special needs — out into the world prepared
to be productive and responsible citizens, it is no surprise that LCCE
is perfect for helping to meet the transition requirements established
by the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act Reauthorization of
1997.
LCCE has progressively gained wider acceptance and momentum as an
important educational approach not only for students with special
education needs, but for many others who are "at risk" and in need of a
more functional, challenging, and engaging curriculum.
