LCCE Assessment Instruments
Competency Rating Scale (CRS)
The CRS is a valuable instrument because it provides a way to assess
each student’s competency level through observation and interviews
using a person who knows the student well, such as a teacher or parent.
This informal and brief assessment process has a relatively high degree
of validity. The CRS may be used at both elementary and secondary
levels.
The instrument and its manual are contained in the curriculum guide
Life Centered Career Education: A Competency Based Approach,
5th Edition (Brolin, 1997) and in Life Centered Career Education:
Modified Curriculum for Individuals with Moderate Disabilities
(Loyd and Brolin, 1997).

LCCE Knowledge Battery (KB)

Primarily a screening instrument, the KB is a criterion-referenced
test designed to pinpoint specific competency deficiencies. It was
standardized on students with mild mental retardation and specific
learning disabilities, but can be used, with cautions, with other
populations.
Available in parallel forms, the KB consists of two 200-item
multiple-choice tests that cover the first 20 competencies. Data
indicate that the two forms of the KB are reliable and equivalent.
Scores are provided at both the competency and domain level. The
Student Competency Assessment Record (SCAR) is used to record student's
knowledge scores.
The KB is part of the complete curriculum package and can also be
purchased separately. A Pictorial Knowledge Battery for the Modified
Curriculum is under development.
Together, the CRS and KB provide a relatively accurate assessment of
students with mild mental retardation and specific learning disability
instructional needs.

LCCE Performance Battery (PB)

The Performance Batteries were designed to go a step beyond
ascertaining students' knowledge of the LCCE competencies, and to
actually assess students' ability to apply the LCCE competencies in
their lives. Like the knowledge Battery the Performance Battery is
curriculum based.
The PB consists of two alternate forms for each of the 21 competency
units. The majority of the items are performance-based. It is composed
of open-ended questions, role-playing scenarios, card-sorting and other
hands-on activities.
The PB can be administered after the knowledge battery to establish a
fuller measure of competence, prior to instruction in any competency
area as a pretest, and after instruction to measure gain in competence.
Only one unit test is recommended for administration at a time.
The PB is part of the complete curriculum package and can also be
purchased separately.
A Performance Battery for the modified curriculum is in the planning
stages.
