
About the Program Chair
Douglas Cheney, Ph.D., has 38 years’ experience in special education and is a national leader in the area of emotional and behavioral disabilities. He is highly respected for his research, scholarship, and leadership in the field and has directed a number of large federal grant projects.
Dr. Cheney was the director of Washington’s Behavior Research Center on Evidenced Based Practices (2004-2010) and The BEACONS Outreach Project: Washington’s Positive Behavior Support Network (2003-2009). From 1997 to 1999 he co-chaired Washington’s Statewide Task Force on Behavioral Disorders, which provided a blueprint for the state’s positive behavior support model.
Currently, Dr. Cheney co-directs the University of Washington’s master’s program for teachers educating students with emotional or behavioral disabilities. He is co-editor of The Journal of Emotional and Behavioral Disorders, an associate editor for Intervention in the School and Clinic, and a consulting editor for Behavioral Disorders and Beyond Behavior.
Dr. Cheney has been a member of the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) since 1987 and has contributed to the Council’s programs in myriad volunteer leadership positions. He is a past president of the Council for Children with Behavioral Disorders (CCBD), a division of CEC.
As the CEC 2012 and 2013 Convention Program Chair, Dr. Cheney presides over the planning and development of the convention’s educational program, consulting with the field and working closely with the Program Advisory Committee.
