Register for a visit to one of Nashville’s interesting and innovative educational programs. An informed host will accompany each tour. You may register for Educational Site Visits for an additional fee when you register for the Convention & Expo.
Educational site visits will depart from the Gaylord Opryland Hotel & Convention Center. Please plan to arrive 15 minutes prior to departure time. Tours are fully accessible. If you require special assistance, please contact Jane Uffelman at 703/264-9442 or janeu@cec.sped.org.

Site Visit 1: Tennessee School for the Blind

Focus: Visual Impairment, Technology and Media, Career Development/Transition
Description: The Tennessee School for the Blind (TSB) was established by an Act of the Tennessee Legislature in 1844. It has been at its present location in the Donelson community since 1952. TSB is a fully accredited unit school serving approximately 160 Pre-Kindergarten through 12th grade students on our campus. Day and weekday residential programs are offered. About forty-five percent of the student body pursues a traditional academic program. The remaining students require more adaptive programs to meet their specific or generalized cognitive challenges. The school also provides educational support services to an additional 900 students through our Braille Production Center, Outreach Teaching, and Resource Library.
The school tour will focus on recent advances in adaptive technologies and the vital role of the Expanded Core Curricula in providing successful transition and life-long success for students challenged by vision loss and other physical and cognitive challenges.

Focus: Developmental Disabilities, Career Development/Transition
Description: The Tennessee Rehabilitation Center (TRC) in Smyrna, Tenn., is a comprehensive residential vocational rehabilitation facility that offers specialized programs and services within a campus environment. Operated by the Tennessee Division of Rehabilitation Services in the Department of Human Services, TRC is one of only eight such facilities in the United States and assists individuals with disabilities to achieve their goals of employment and independent living.
The tour of TRC will allow participants to view the different areas of vocational training, as well as all of the other primary service units including vocational evaluation, work adjustment, transitional living, traumatic brain injury, vision impairment, medical services, occupational and physical therapy, recreation, and residential services. Participants will also receive an orientation to the Center’s rehabilitation philosophy as well as techniques and strategies used at the Center.
Please Note: Comfortable shoes should be worn due to the size of the campus. Wheelchairs and scooters are welcome. Please contact Jane Uffelman at janeu@cec.sped.org to make wheelchair/scooter arrangements.

Focus: Physical/Health Disabilities, Learning Disabilities
Description: Harris-Hillman School provides a safe and appropriate learning environment for students with multiple disabilities including students who are medically fragile and have dual diagnoses. The school’s purpose is to ensure that each student achieves the maximum degree of independence and achievement possible through the use of individual instruction, collaboration, and community resources.
Part of the Metro Nashville Public School System, Harris Hillman School opened in 1975 for the purpose of serving students with disabilities Students are placed at Harris-Hillman when it is determined by the IEP team that this is the least restrictive environment which will meet their educational and medical needs. The level of severity of the disabilities served has increased significantly since the creation of our school. In 2009, the majority of our students, ranging in age from 3 to 22, have disabilities in the severe/profound range and are considered to be medically fragile. Harris-Hillman is dedicated to providing a comprehensive program through individualized educational plans, various therapies, and experiential opportunities that they would not otherwise receive in a less restrictive setting.

Description: Visit the Vanderbilt Kennedy Center on the campus of Vanderbilt University. The Center was founded in 1965 at Peabody College as the second nationally designated National Institutes of Health Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Research Center. Today, it is part of a national network of 14 centers supported in part since its inception by the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development. In 2005, the Center was designated a University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities, Education, Research, and Service by the U.S. Administration on Developmental Disabilities, a network of 67 centers in all U.S. states and territories. The Center has evolved into an interdisciplinary research, training, diagnosis, and treatment institute, embracing faculty and resources available through Vanderbilt University Medical Center, the College of Arts and Science, and Peabody College of Education and Human Development. The Center brings together scientists and practitioners in behavior, education, genetics, and neuroscience to work together in unique ways to solve the mysteries of development and learning.
The tour will include visits with Kennedy Center researchers, clinicians, and faculty and staff involved in both pre-service and community training.

Site Visit 8: Vanderbilt Bill Wilkerson Center

Focus: Communicative Disabilities and Deafness, Technology and Media
Description: This tour will provide an in-depth look at the pediatric hearing, speech, and language therapies conducted at the Center. This will include assessment and intervention for children with speech and language delays and disorders; specific treatments for children with augmentative communication needs, autism spectrum disorders, stuttering, feeding and swallowing problems, repaired cleft palate, developmental delay, and motor speech disorders; and a close-up look at the Mama Lere Hearing School which teaches children with hearing loss to listen, sing, read, and talk.
Tour participants will also take a look at the state-of-the-art research labs where studies are being conducted on treatment for children with language disorders, deafness, and stuttering.
