President Barack Obama took office on Jan. 21, 2009. Read his White House Agenda for Education and his FY 2010 Education Budget Proposal.

CEC Shares its FY 2011 Budget Appropriations Recommendations with the Administration
For more than 34 years, CEC has advocated for the full funding of all parts of IDEA and increased funding for other programs impacting special and gifted education. Therefore, in November 2009, CEC shared a letter outlining its fiscal year (FY) 2011 appropriations recommendations with the White House and the Department of Education, continuing its advocacy for the needs of our professionals and the children they serve.

CEC Urges President to Place Students with Disabilities at Forefront of Charter School Initiatives
CEC agreed with the Obama Administration that charter schools must be held to the same high level of accountability as traditional public schools and are at their best when they serve as centers of innovation. But CEC pointed out data that demonstrates charter schools often overlook and underserve students with disabilities. Therefore, in June 2009, CEC wrote a letter to President Barack Obama urging the administration to place students with disabilities at the forefront of their charter school initiatives.

CEC Participates in White House Meeting on Restraint and Seclusion
After attending a congressional hearing about the use of restraints and seclusion in public schools in May 2009, CEC, along with representatives from its divisions CCBD and CASE, joined other leaders in the field at the White House to discuss issues concerning restraint and seclusion policies with the Obama Administration.

Kareem Dale Attends CEC’s Convention & Expo in Seattle
In April 2009, CEC was pleased to host Kareem Dale, newly appointed special assistant for disability policy, at its Annual Convention & Expo in Seattle, WA. Mr. Dale spoke for almost an hour to a room packed full of CEC members, taking 25 minutes of their questions.

CEC Shares Its Priority Recommendations with Obama Administration
Shortly after he took office, CEC presented the President with its Priority Recommendations for Education Policy. CEC also provided the Obama Administration with specific information about several of its key policies, including:
