Join Us for CEC’s Annual CAN Meeting

About the CAN Meeting

Every year, participants of CEC’s Children and Youth Action Network (CAN) come from across the country to attend the annual CAN Meeting.  Held at CEC’s Headquarters Office, just outside of Washington, DC, this meeting provides attendees with the resources needed to:

  • Enhance grassroots/grasstops capabilities
  • Gain an in-depth understanding of legislative issues confronting children with exceptionalities and the professionals who work on their behalf
  • Network with colleagues on effective advocacy techniques and strategies 

The Annual CAN Meeting will be held from June 7-10, 2008 at CEC’s Headquarters Office located at 1110 North Glebe Road, Suite 300, Arlington, Virginia 22201. 

Registration Information

The registration fee for this 4-day event is $125, and students will receive a discounted rate of $50.  This fee covers meeting materials and some meals.  The deadline for registration is May 7, 2008.

While payment can be made before the meeting or during the registration period on June 7, please submit your registration form to CEC before May 7. If you are a CAN Coordinator for a division, you can request that CEC bill your division directly. This option is not available for state/provincial units.

Hotel Accommodations

A room block at the Holiday Inn Arlington at Ballston is now available at the discounted rate of $149/night (plus tax). This hotel is conveniently located 1 block from CEC Headquarters, and is Metro-accessible. Meeting attendees are responsible for making their own reservations. Please call the hotel directly at 703.243.9800 to make your reservation, and reference “CEC-CAN” to receive the discounted rate. The deadline for making your reservation is May 7, 2008.

CEC Headquarters is conveniently located in the Washington, DC metropolitan area and approximately 5 blocks from the Ballston metro stop (orange line).

Capitol Hill Appointments

On June 10, attendees will meet with members of Congress and Congressional staff to discuss legislative issues impacting students with disabilities and/or gifts and talents and the professionals who work on their behalf. 

This is your opportunity to share with policymakers how to improve educational, behavioral and developmental outcomes for children with disabilities and working conditions for professionals.  CEC will provide attendees with meeting materials including talking points and legislative updates in preparation for meetings with Congressional offices.

Attendees are responsible for scheduling their own appointments with Congressional offices and informing CEC of those appointments. Appointments should be scheduled between 9:30am – 5pm on June 10.  CEC will hold two de-briefing sessions on Capitol Hill (location TBD), one at noon and one at 3pm to discuss your meetings, share your experiences, and answer questions.
