Inclusion: A Special Education Dilemma

A video moderated by Dr. Quentin Young, a well-known physician and former head of Cook County Hospital in the State of Illinois, U.S.

This video presents a roundtable discussion of the issue of bringing children with disabilities into general education classrooms, and its intended to stimulate discussions on this controversial topic. The panelists are adults with disabilities, parents of children with disabilities, special education administrators, attorneys, and advocates. As a group, they represent a range of visual, hearing, and physical disabilities. The panelists' differing views resulted in two clearly defined positions. Some believe that children with disabilities should receive support services in the general classroom and be educated with non-disabled students, regardless of the nature and degree of their disability. Others believe that a spectrum of services, in addition to the general classroom, should be available to meet the needs of each child.

The video is a training tool and should be of interest to college students, legislators, advocates, agencies, K-12 teachers in general education classrooms, and special education professionals. The contents are from a United States viewpoint.

Portraits in Courage

Antoine Casubolo and Valerie Tibet, Directors

This video illustrates contexts in which many teachers work -- violence, poverty, downgraded social status, difficult working conditions, and ever-increasing psychological pressure. Their usually strong vocational drive runs the risk of being eroded by often hostile environments and a lack of respect from large sectors of society.

From Rwanda to Mongolia, and from the outskirts of Paris to Soweto or to the Bronx, the camera explores the life and work of teachers -- a tribute to their courage.
