Curriculum 2005 -- A Space for all: An Introduction to Inclusive
Education
By Sigamoney Manicka Naicker, Western Cape Education Department, Cape
Town, South Africa
This book is an account of one man's conceptual and practical journey
in search of an answer to the national dilemma: how do we remain true to
our Constitution, to international conventions, and to our conscience
and best help our learners who experience barriers to learning to occupy
their place in South African society as fully integrated citizens
capable of realising their goals? The Introduction describes South
Africa at a turning point. Part 2 reviews the history of special
education and education support services in South Africa. Section 3
addresses issues, challenges, and possibilities of inclusive education,
including rights/legitimacy, translating inclusive education into
reality, definitional issues, experiences of other countries,
curriculum, expectations, and related topics. Part 4 examines paradigm
shifts from apartheid education to transformational outcomes-based
education, and from special education to inclusive education. A final
section is a practical guide intended for examination of outcomes-based
education in relation to inclusive education, as well as implications
for remedial education, special/adaptation classes, and education of
gifted pupils.

Learning, Knowledge, and Cultural Context
Linda King, Ed.
This volume brings together contributions on indigenous knowledge,
the cultural context of learning, and the interplay between the
so-called "traditional" and "modern" forms of education. Various
different communities are examined, from Egypt to Benin, and from
central Brazil to New Caledonia. The contributions bear witness to the
extraordinary diversity and richness of educational approaches found in
these communities and, at the same time, to the sense of common humanity
which all cultures share with one another.
