Diversity Professional Development
CEC initiates several professional development activities, working with
both special and general educators, to advance knowledge of best
practices for students with exceptionalities from diverse cultures and
ensure they are implemented in classrooms across the nation and world.
These activities include:
CEC Annual Convention & Expo
CEC's Annual Convention & Expo presents research as well as
instructional strategies on educating students with exceptionalities
from diverse backgrounds. One of the convention's most popular learning
opportunities is the strand on multicultural education. Here, educators
can attend several sessions related to a particular aspect of
multicultural education. The CEC Convention & Expo also features the
Multicultural Summit. Led by a prominent speaker in the field, the
Summit focuses on the most compelling issues in educating students from
diverse cultures today. Plus, the convention presents numerous general
sessions on multicultural education.
Publications and Resources
CEC's publications, including books, videos, journals, digests, and
newsletter, give educators an extensive array of resources from which to
learn about multicultural education. Topics include assessing diverse
students, over-representation, teaching English Language Learners with
learning difficulties, multicultural gifted education, and more.
The Division for Culturally and Linguistically
Diverse Exceptional
Learners (DDEL)
DDEL advances educational opportunities for culturally and
linguistically diverse learners with disabilities and/or gifts and
talents, their families, and the professionals who serve them. It is the
only professional organization dedicated exclusively to the concerns of
culturally and linguistically diverse exceptional learners.
The Division of International Special Education and
Services
(DISES) DISES focuses on special education programs and services
in other countries. DISES promotes international communication,
cooperation, and progress in education and services for children and
youth who have disabilities and/or are gifted and talented -- across all
age groups, from infancy through adulthood.
