CEC 2008 Convention & Expo Highlights
Learning, Networking, and Fun!
At the 2008 CEC Annual Convention & Expo in Boston, participants had
over 600 information-packed sessions to choose from. Everywhere you
turned there was the opportunity to network with the “who’s
who” in special education. Hundreds of exhibitors displayed the
newest publications, products, and services. The Career Center was abuzz
with students interviewing for their first job. The Student Forum was
packed with tips and ideas for getting the most out of your CEC
membership.
And The Envelope Goes To…
Our thanks to the many members who helped make this a wonderful
convention for students: Chris Evans, Jane Hardin, and the students from
Simmons College for setting us up with Medieval Manor for the
student scholarship fundraiser and for the Student Spot; Wendy
Ehrensberger, Lynn DeCapua, Marya Grande, Stephen Kroeger, and Craig
Miner for their presentations at the Student Chapter Faculty
Advisors’ Roundtable; Erik Carter and the panelists and poster
presenters at the Student Forum; and a special thank you to your Student
Committee—Cindy Chambers, Emily Canty, James Williams, Andrea
Abel, Stephen Wright, Laura Cross, Shea Obremski, and Trisha
Steinbrecher, who worked all year to bring you the best of the best.

CEC Launches New Mentoring Pilot
CEC has implemented an exciting new pilot (test) project to support
new/future special education teachers, the CEC/CEC Pioneers Division
Student Mentoring Pilot. Members from the CEC’s Pioneers Division
(CEC-PD), including CEC past presidents, award winners, and many from
the “Who’s Who in Special Education,” are mentoring
students from the following CEC student chapters:
-
University of Cincinnati (OH) Chapter 0080, Dr. Stephen Kroeger,
Faculty Advisor
-
Canisius College (NY) Chapter 0432, Dr. Marya Grande, Faculty
Advisor
-
Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville (IL) Chapter 0696, Dr.
Craig Miner, Faculty Advisor
-
Georgian Court University (NJ) Chapter 0970, Dr. Lynn DeCapua,
Faculty Advisor
-
Hood College (MD) Chapter 1167, Dr. Kelly Kantz, Faculty
Advisor
The Mentoring Pilot is the brainchild of the Student Transitional
Workgroup, which met in the spring of 2006. The Workgroup, which was
comprised of student members, Student Chapter Faculty Advisors, and
first year professionals, developed a number of
strategies/recommendations to encourage and support student members to
transition to professional membership after graduation.
The feedback on this pilot from the students, mentors, and faculty
advisors has been positive. At the 2008 CEC Convention & Expo in
Boston, the students and their mentors will have the opportunity to meet
in a special reception. An interim report on the pilot will be presented
to the CEC Board of Directors at the convention, and a final report and
recommendation will be made later this year.
Congratulations to these chapters and their faculty advisors and
students; and thank you to the CEC-PD members who are serving as
mentors. This experience will be rewarding for all of the
participants--the CEC-PD members who will mentor future special
educators and the students who will benefit from the experience and
expertise of these long term CEC members.
