About the CEC Board of Directors

The Board of Directors is CEC's administrative, legislative, and policy-making body. The 20-member Board includes four officers: President, President-Elect, Immediate Past-President and Treasurer; 15 Members-at-Large; and one Student Member. Four Member-at-Large positions are designated for two individuals from multicultural backgrounds, one from a Preschool-12 classroom, and one from Canada. Members of these groups may also apply for any open position. Board Members serve three-year terms.

Qualifications Specific to CEC Officer and Board of Director Positions 

President Elect: To be considered as a nominee for this position, individuals must have served on the CEC Board of Directors or have had equivalent leadership experience within other CEC units, divisions or activities of the Council or in similar organizations/associations.

Treasurer:  Nominees for this position must have demonstrated both CEC leadership and extensive experience in understanding and working with financial aspects of non-profit agencies or organizations including budgeting, audits and finances.  In addition to serving on the Board of Directors, the Treasurer also serves as Chair of CEC’s Finance and Audit Standing Committee (FASC).  In this position, the Treasurer chairs two face-to-face meetings each year of the FASC: one during the annual convention and expo, and one typically in early September (traditionally beginning on late Thursday afternoon and ending on Friday).  The Treasurer is elected by the Board of Directors and serves a three-year term of office.  The Treasurer is not in the line of succession for the Presidency of the Council.

Member-at-Large Positions: Nominees for these positions should have demonstrated knowledge and/or experience with the Council and its various activities.

Member-at-Large Non-Designated (3 positions): Any member of the Council is eligible to be nominated for these positions.

Member-at-Large, Canada (1 position):  Any member of the Council who resides in Canada.  In addition to serving on the Board of Directors, the Member-at-Large, Canada also serves as a member of CEC’s Canadian/U.S. Committee.  (The Canadian/U.S. Committee meets once face-to-face during the Annual Convention and also conducts business via periodic conference calls).

Member-at-Large, Diverse Ethnic and Multicultural Groups (1 position): Any member of the Council belonging to a group that, because of racial or ethnic origin, constitutes a distinctive and recognizable entity in our society (e.g., Hispanic, Native American/First Nations, African American, Asian and Pacific Islander) is eligible for these positions. For the 2013 election, preference will be given to Hispanic candidates.
