02/17/12 - Join CEC for White House Dialogue on Education for Students with Disabilities
CEC members are invited to listen in via conference call to a special education dialogue with leaders from the White House Domestic Policy Council and the U.S. Department of Education Office of Special Education and Rehabilitation Services.
| 02/13/12 - CEC Calls for a Greater Investment in Core Programs in FY13 Budget
While CEC appreciates President Obama's proposed increases in public education funding, including $20 million IDEA Part C, and $30 billion for teachers' jobs, we are disappointed that special education takes a back seat again this year with level funding for other IDEA programs, including Part B, Section 619, and Part D.

| 12/28/11 - CEC approves of Senate bill limiting restraint, seclusion
Sen. Tom Harkin has introduced the “Keeping All Students Safe Act,” to ensure students will “never be subjected to abusive or violent disciplinary strategies or [be] left alone and unsupervised.” The bill will set long-overdue standards to protect children from physical and psychological harm and ensure a safe learning environment for teachers and students alike. 02/10/12 - NCLB waivers announced, states and U.S. DOE committed to serving students with disabilities
Ten states received NCLB waivers, allowing them to replace NCLB targets with targets of their own. CEC will closely monitor implementation of the waivers, but believes states are committed to ensuring that students with disabilities will be included appropriately in accountability systems.
| 10/01/11 - October is National Bullying Prevention Month
Did you know that more than 160,000 U.S. students stay home from school each day for fear of being bullied? This issue is particularly relevant for students with exceptionalities and therefore for special educators. October is National Bullying Prevention Month, so visit PACER’s National Bullying Prevention Center for resources to address bullying in your school and community -- not just in October, but all year long.

CEC is a proud partner of the Take 25 campaign, a grassroots initiative to heighten awareness of children’s safety issues and of National Missing Children’s Day, May 25. Teach your students about personal safety with Take 25’s free resources -- including their new mini lesson plans, ready for use in the classroom.
| 05/13/11 - National Board for Professional Teaching Standards Accepting Applications for Science Standards Committee
The NBPTS is seeking applications for the committee responsible for reviewing and revising Science Standards and would like to have special education representation. If you are a special educator of adolescents or young adults, please consider applying! Please visit the NBPTS Web site for more information and a link to the online application. The deadline is May 31, 2011.
| 05/05/11 - President Obama Honors National Teacher of the Year, Former Special Educator
The Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) has named Michelle Shearer, a Maryland science teacher whose experience includes teaching students who are deaf and hard of hearing, as its 2011 National Teacher of the Year. Shearer and several other educators were honored at the White House on Tuesday, May 3.
