10/08/09 - Helen Keller Statue Unveiled at U.S. Capitol
On Wednesday, a bronze statue of Helen Keller debuted at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. The statue is not only the Capitol's first depicting a child, but also the first depicting a person with a disability.

10/02/09 - CEC Supports Department of Education Official
Read CEC’s statement regarding Kevin Jennings, Assistant Deputy Secretary of the Office of Safe and Drug Free Schools (OSDFS), and efforts to create a safe and positive school climate for all students.

09/15/09 - CEC Adopts New Policy on Physical Restraint and Seclusion
CEC’s Board of Directors has approved a policy on physical restraint and seclusion in school settings, stating that schools should emphasize positive behavior supports for students and only resort to restraint and seclusion when a child or others are in danger.

09/04/09 - CEC Comments on Proposed Race to the Top Application
In recently submitted recommendations to the U.S. Department of Education, CEC urged education officials to better include students with disabilities and gifts and talents in the Race to the Top fund’s priorities, requirements, definitions, and selection criteria.

11/02/09 - Upcoming Carnegie Hall Performance to Feature Children with Disabilities
The music ensemble from Sidney Lanier Center in Gainesville, Fla., will perform "DIScovering ABILITIES" at Carnegie Hall on May 21. This will be a culmination of research and performances between the students, all of whom have disabilities, and professors of music education. Opportunities exist to sponsor students’ attendance; please see the online flyer for more information.

On Oct. 21, the International Society for Technology in Education will host a webinar exploring how school districts can develop proactive assistive technology teams to best meet the needs of children with exceptionalities.

This inspiring documentary is a photojournalist’s account of efforts to include his son with cerebral palsy in the education system and other aspects of daily family life.

10/06/09 - Justice Dept. Publishes First National Study on Crime Against Persons with Disabilities
Released by the Bureau of Justice Statistics, the study found that the risk of violence for young persons (ages 12-19) with disabilities was nearly twice as high as that of young people without disabilities.

10/05/09 - Education Dept. Video Contest Challenges Students to Take Responsibility for Their Education
The Department encourages children ages 13 and older to create two-minute videos demonstrating education’s importance to them for the national “I Am What I Learn” video contest. Deadline is Nov. 2.
