Statement in Support of the Assistant Deputy Secretary of the Office of Safe and Drug Free Schools (OSDFS)
Bruce A. Ramirez
Executive Director, Council for Exceptional Children
Oct. 2, 2009 -- The Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) has always believed that a safe and positive school climate critically impacts the personal development and academic achievement of all students.
In choosing Kevin Jennings, we trust that President Obama and U.S. Department of Education Secretary Duncan selected a highly qualified candidate to be the Assistant Deputy Secretary of the Office of Safe and Drug Free Schools (OSDFS).
As a classroom teacher, author, and head of the Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Education Network (GLSEN), Mr. Jennings has dedicated his career to ensuring that our schools remain supportive, safe, and positive for all students.
Recent incidents of school violence have drawn attention to the unacceptable cost of not assuring a safe and positive climate in our schools for all students. Furthermore, some students with disabilities may be more at risk because they do not necessarily have the ability to comprehend and report incidents of violence.
CEC supports diverse, inclusive learning environments for all students. We recognize that bullying, harassment, and discriminatory behaviors are prevalent in schools across the country and look forward to working closely with Mr. Jennings toward our common goal of assuring that every child is afforded a safe and positive school climate.
