10/08/09 - Helen Keller Statue Unveiled at U.S. Capitol
On Wednesday, a bronze statue of Helen Keller debuted at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. The statue is not only the Capitol's first depicting a child, but also the first depicting a person with a disability.

09/15/09 - CEC Adopts New Policy on Physical Restraint and Seclusion
CEC’s Board of Directors has approved a policy on physical restraint and seclusion in school settings, stating that schools should emphasize positive behavior supports for students and only resort to restraint and seclusion when a child or others are in danger.

07/02/09 - CEC Celebrates Rescinding of Medicaid Regulations
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has officially rescinded three Medicaid regulations and delayed the enforcement of a fourth. This action, which CEC and its members pursued for more than two years, will save school districts and early intervention programs almost $9 billion.

ARRA provides states with the funds they desperately need to continue offering early-intervention services for young children with disabilities and their families, said Division for Early Childhood president Susan Maude in a recent Education Week article.

A new U.S. Supreme Court ruling allows parents to be reimbursed for private school tuition, even when a child hasn’t received special education services from a public school, a decision that undermines the collaborative spirit of IDEA. 06/12/09 - CEC Celebrates Release of Blueprint for Improving NCLB
As a leading voice in the Forum on Educational Accountability, CEC has joined other partners in endorsing the coalition’s blueprint for overhauling the No Child Left Behind Act and hopes its recommendations will influence new federal legislation. “Empowering Schools and Improving Learning” calls for more comprehensive assessment methods, increased school funding, and better teacher training.
