CEC honors OSEP's Patty Guard with Outstanding Public Service Award
Patty Guard spent 27 years with the Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP) ensuring that individuals with disabilities are afforded the same rights and opportunities as every American. CEC recently honored Ms. Guard for her service with its Outstanding Public Service Award.

2011 CEC Committee Leadership Opportunities
Serving CEC is a rewarding experience.  Make a difference and volunteer for one of CEC’s committee’s that relates to your talents and expertise.  Contribute your leadership to the Council’s strategic direction and governance operations.  The deadline for applications is October 4, 2010.

CEC’s Advocacy Pays Off: $10 Billion for Jobs and $16 Billion for FMAP
After months of advocacy by CEC, other education groups, and individuals across the nation, the House and Senate have both passed legislation that will save educator jobs and extend Federal Medicaid funding.  Thanks to all who joined the campaign!

ADA Turns 20
Celebrations marking the 20th anniversary of Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) were held at the White House and on Capitol Hill, and CEC was there.

The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) has leveled the playing field and improved the futures of children and youth with disabilities, but work must continue, including ratification of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD).

Nominate a Deserving Student for a Yes I Can! Award
CEC’s Yes I Can! Awards honor students with disabilities who have excelled. Awards are given in nine categories and every student nominated receives a certificate of achievement. Nominations are due Oct. 22, 2010.

Celebrate Your Colleagues’ Accomplishments With a CEC Professional Award
Recognize outstanding special educators with CEC’s Professional Awards: Wallin Lifetime Achievement, Clarissa Hug Teacher of the Year, Special Education Research, Outstanding CEC Leadership, and Business Awards. Nominations are due Oct. 22, 2010.

CEC Holds Hill ESEA Briefing
Attendees packed CEC’s Capitol Hill briefing, held this week in cooperation with Rep. Paul Hodes (D-N.H.), on aligning ESEA and IDEA. The briefing was part of CEC’s annual Children and Youth Action Network (CAN) meeting.

CEC Honors Rep. Castle for Lifelong Service
Congressman Mike Castle of Delaware is the recipient of the 2010 CEC Outstanding Public Service Award.  Castle, a nine-term congressman has “consistently worked to ensure that individuals are not defined by their disabilities and are afforded the same rights and opportunities as all Americans,” said Bruce A. Ramirez, CEC’s executive director.
